Forty Queen Street is a luxury, spacious two-bedroom cottage in a conservation area, right beside the sea.
A fabulous retreat in the heart of Castletown, our ancient capital. Just a short stroll from historic Castle Rushen and pubs, restaurants and shops in the traditional town centre, yet located superbly for brisk walks at Scarlett.
With a warm welcome for guests and dogs who like to enjoy the best things in life.
Built late in the 17th century, this little cottage in Queen Street, has history oozing from its walls. The construction of these homes was simple; blocks of dressed Castletown limestone are rare here, more loose limestone rubble which came to hand augmented with chunks of igneous granite from Scarlett's extinct volcano, sea smoothed cobbles from the beach and odd pieces of wood, all held together with earth mortar. There were no foundations, just walls over 18 inches thick.
Despite now being in a conservation area, in the 1960s Queen Street was threatened with total demolition. Subsequent residents have modernised and concealed the beautiful and sturdy stone constructions which, despite the unchecked onslaught of the south westerlies blowing in off the Irish Sea, have faced the elements so admirably.
As we were restoring Forty Queen Street, we made a conscious decision to leave exposed certain fundamental elements of the construction, whilst also ensuring a cozy and sumptuous feel to the interior. Some of our walls are rough and our beams unfinished, and are coupled with touches of 21st Century luxury and comfort
All guests are welcome and canine guests are very keen on Forty Queen Street, what with the sea nearby and space to spread out. The island boasts fabulous walks for dogs and humans however we advise all who plan to bring their dog that regrettably island pubs are unable to welcome dogs in by law, which we think is a shame
